I have a picture-perfect memory But only when there’s a photograph to remind me And so you’ll always be sweetly smiling, standing next to me, My head against your cheek I have the day you first walked toward me I keep it in a folder I have with the day you said goodbye I have the kiss where you said “just in case” You must have known that it would be the last And all of these things I have, they don’t amount to much They don’t really take up any physical space And still they fill my heart, knowing that I have known you I have known you In another place I have a suitcase full of dreams and pieces of steps to nowhere Leading around in circles, some assembly required And I have a box of frozen armor twisted into battle shapes from long forgotten wars Long forgotten crusades and inquisitions I have a well of forgiveness It bubbles over every now and then And I have the puddles under my feet And I have every moment big and small that swells the rings of this tree And I have your initials carved into my bark And all of these things I have, they don’t amount to much They don’t really take up any physical space And still they fill my heart, knowing that I have known you I have known you In another place I have a song I started writing years ago No melody, no lyrics Maybe it was always about you Maybe it was always about you

The Vote 03:14
Quiet people, quiet power Quiet minute, quiet hour Quiet patience, quiet line Quiet morning, quiet mind There will come a time When all my fellow wallflowers and I Will stand up and be counted but not to be heard There will come a time When all my fellow wallflowers and I Will stand up and speak out but not with spoken word No, we won’t say a word Quiet passion, quiet fire Quiet conscience, quiet ire Quiet courage, quiet fight Quiet honor, quiet right There will come a time When all my fellow wallflowers and I Will stand up and be counted but not to be heard There will come a time When all my fellow wallflowers and I Will stand up and speak out but not with spoken word No, we won’t say a word So run your mouth Can’t promise that I’ll listen, but Run these lines Over and over again, and Through this noise While you’re doing laps around yourself I will cool my heels I will rest my voice Quiet people, quiet power Quiet minute, quiet hour Quiet patience, quiet line Quiet morning, quiet mind

Your love is like a piano without a full set of keys And I just don’t know where to put my hands ‘Cause I still need my accidentals when I’m playing in C It’s the space between the notes that guides where they land Every note tells a story and I want to know yours But sometimes when I press, I get no sound It’s like trying to play a progression of chords When your B flat has broken off and it’s rolling around And you’re fingers start failing and you don’t know quite why ‘Cause they always used to work so well You’ve got a book full of songs that you don’t even try Maybe some stories you just don’t tell Maybe some stories you just don’t tell Without a full set of keys Your love is like a piano without a full set of keys I’ve rewritten these lyrics now hundreds of times But the melody still stays the same And for all of the many permutations of rhymes There’s a thing about it that refuses to change It’s that feeling you get when the words won’t come out When the meaning gets lost in the verse When you almost forget what you’re singing about And the chorus just keeps getting worse And you start to give up but you keep coming back ‘Cause you can’t hide from the things that you love And just when the foundation’s starting to crack You realize what you have is enough You realize what you have is enough Without a full set of keys Your love is like a piano without a full set of keys And you start to give up but you keep coming back ‘Cause you can’t hide from the things that you love And just when the foundation’s starting to crack You realize what you have is enough You realize what you have is enough Without a full set of keys Your love is like a piano without a full set of keys Your love is like a piano without a full set of keys

Fireflies 03:53
I saw the first fireflies of summer And right then, I thought of you Oh, I could see us catching them and setting them free Honey, that’s what you do That’s what you do to me And then the other night when it was raining And thunder crashed and lightning crossed the sky I thought of you and how you love this kind of weather I closed my eyes, held my face to the rain and smiled And pictured us together And every little light Every little light is you, is you Every little light is you, is you I’m starting to learn the meaning of your faces I’m getting to know the shapes of your eyes I’m coming to find you’re with me in my dreams now And this night belongs to you and me and the fireflies And every little light Every little light is you, is you Every little light is you, is you Every little light is you Every little light is Every little light is You’re in the fireflies You’re in the street lamp lights You’re in the starry skies Every little light is you

I once slept in these cabins I once lay on this hill I once swam in these waters I once kissed in this field I once muddied my sandals Catching frogs in this pond I once ran to this highway In the quiet of this dawn And come walk with me down by the lakeside Listen to the sound of a hundred children sleeping We can speak without really even speaking We can pretend it’s other people’s secrets that we’re keeping We once sat by this boathouse Watching firework displays We once toasted marshmallows In this bonfire blaze We once picked the wild berries On the path to this old campground We once stood on these tables We once sang as the rains came down And come walk with me down by the lakeside Listen to the sounds of a hundred children sleeping We can speak without really even speaking We can pretend it’s other people’s secrets that we’re keeping Take a little stroll down by the water’s edge To the place where all the lovers used to go Skip a stone along the surface and watch the ripples fade With the memories of the ones we used to throw We can walk along the edge of this foggy, moonlit shore We can follow in the footsteps of so many years before We are carved into this hillside We are painted in these walls We are alive in what is left We are forgiven for our faults And come walk with me down by the lakeside Listen to the sound of a hundred children sleeping We can speak without really even speaking We can pretend it’s other people’s secrets that we’re keeping

Trapeze 03:57
It’s a precarious perch One hand on, one ready to let go Standing high above the safety net below And you’re ready to fly It’s a lesson in trust Two hands swinging from the opposite side And they will catch you if the timing’s just right So you give it a try And out in the air There may be a moment when you Just might slip away There’s always a chance that you’ll fall and you’ll try again Always a chance that you’ll make it okay And isn’t that what love is Isn’t that what love is Hand in hand in the summer breeze And the two of you swinging in that big trapeze of life Big trapeze of life It’s a time-honored tale Boy meets girl and the rest we all know World stops spinning and time moves so slow ‘Til it all passes by It’s a journey in faith Paths entwine ‘til they join into one And neither knows where the other’s begun Or where their fates lie And out in the world There may be a moment when you Just might slip away There’s always a chance that you’ll fall and you’ll try again Always somebody who makes it okay And isn’t that what love is Isn’t that what love is Hand in hand in the summer breeze And the two of you swinging in that big trapeze Yeah with all of your friends and your families And the two of you swinging in that big trapeze of life Big trapeze of life

Shine On 03:26
I’ve gotten used to a one-woman bed I’m making the most of this time on my own I’m pulling the pieces apart and rebuilding my Capacity to love I’m clearing the walls of all the still frames of our happiness Putting up images of strength and beauty I’m smoothing the wrinkles and taking my solitude in stride And I tell myself This is the most important test you’ll ever have to take This is the most important day of your life This is the time you must remember all the good things And this is when your true colors shine And shine on, and shine on, and shine on, and shine on And move on, and get on, and give on, go on And get by I’m wiping that frown off my face one last time I’m taking a deep breath and unfurrowing my brow I’m opening curtains and doors and sweeping out the old news This is my new life Starting now And I tell myself This is the most important test you’ll ever have to take This is the most important day of your life This is the time you must remember all the good things And this is when your true colors shine And shine on And shine on, and shine on, and shine on, and shine on And shine on, and shine on, and shine on, and shine on And move on, and get on, and give on, and go on And live on, and love on, and roll on, hold on And get by Show the world that shine

Afterlove 05:27
Well happiness is happiness until it’s not And forgetting only helps for the things you already forgot I’ll find comfort in my folks’ house And you will drive to your marina And we will both be a little colder for now We’ll go back to our workdays And back to our lives And we will try to get over somehow Where do you go in the afterlove? How do you start to restart? You’re finally free from the pain you gave up But the freedom it hangs so heavy So heavy on your heart Soon we’ll see each other in the same old place And we will greet each other with that same big warm embrace And when we’re out together, we will say we’re just friends But I know your hand will find mine before long You will bring me my mail, and I will ask about the cat But I won’t tell you that I’m writing this song Where do you go in the afterlove? How do you start to restart? You’re finally free from the pain you gave up But the freedom it hangs so heavy So heavy on your heart I still slip and call you “Honey” You still blink at me real slow I just laugh and you ask, “What’s so funny?” I just smile and say, “I don’t know” And it’s true I still love you How do you start to restart? You’re finally free from the pain you gave up But the freedom it hangs so heavy So heavy on your heart Heavy on your heart Heavy on your heart Heavy on your heart

Take Me 02:13
Take me, I’m in the mood to be taken Pull me up to your room Wake me when it is time to be wakened Send me on my way Take me, Honey, I’m ripe for the taking Take me out on the town Lay me, then when the morning is breaking Send me on my way Call me in the afternoon Ask me what I’m doing tonight Pick me up right after work And I will be ready and waiting for you to… Take me, I’m in the mood to be taken Pull me up to your room Wake me when it is time to be wakened Send me on my way Take me, I’m in the mood to be taken Pull me up to your room Wake me when it is time to be wakened Send me on my way

Talk Pretty 03:36
Talk to me sweetly, Honey, just for a while You don’t have to ask me to stay It would be okay If that’s not your style Play me a song and I’ll sing you a tune Call me tomorrow and then I will see you again If that’s not too soon When your body is next to my body I can’t get enough I get flirty and you talk dirty But we haven’t said it’s love Show me your dreams and I’ll show you mine Wave your red flags high We can still say goodbye And I would be fine So walk on this wire with me, dance on this line Don’t be afraid to fall I won’t push you at all You’ll be just fine, fine Hold your body against my body I’ll let you under my skin We said “slowly” so we’ll move slowly But I’m slowly drinking you in Ah we’ll be just fine Ah we’ll be just fine Ah we’ll be just fine Ah we’ll be just fine I’ll build you no cages if you tell me no lies Truth will set you free And the same goes for me That’s no compromise This doesn’t have to be an uphill climb I’d like to know you well But only time will tell And we’ve still got time, time My body is just my body And you’ve been touching my soul Please forgive me if I talk pretty This love takes its toll Ah we’ve still got time Ah we’ve still got time Ah we’ve still got time Ah we’ve still got time

about

"Come walk with me," beckons the title track of Sarah Gilberg's debut album, Other People's Secrets, and the invitation lingers throughout, as she leads the listener through quiet reflections on new love, old love, strength, and healing. Steeped in the traditions of folk and American standards, Sarah writes songs featuring clear, melodic vocal lines and lyrics that are at once both simple and sophisticated, both deeply personal and relatable. Originally composed for solo performance with piano or acoustic guitar, these songs come to life with a new warmth and lushness on this studio recording with the support of jazz musicians Gary Prince on electric guitar, Brian Cruse on acoustic bass, and Tim Cohen on percussion.
